GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE HELP
If you've been trying to verify your Google Business Profile - or fix something as simple as an outdated address - and hitting a wall, you're not alone. It's one of the most common problems Melbourne tradies face, and Google doesn't make it easy to sort out on your own.
This page explains why verification gets stuck, what the most common GBP problems are, and how we help Melbourne trade businesses fix them quickly so they can start showing up where customers are actually looking.
If your listing isn't just unverified but has disappeared from Google Maps entirely, you may have a suspended listing rather than a verification issue.

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears when someone searches for your trade in your suburb. It's what shows up in Google Maps. It's where your reviews live. It's what customers see before they decide whether to call you.
If your profile is unverified, suspended, showing the wrong address, or not set up properly - Google limits how visible your business is in local search results. That means customers searching for an electrician, plumber or tradie in your area are seeing your competitors instead of you.
An unverified or suspended Google Business Profile can effectively make your business invisible in Google Maps — even if you've been operating locally for years. Most tradies don't realise this is happening until someone points it out.
In our experience working with electricians, plumbers and service businesses across Melbourne's eastern suburbs, these are the four issues that come up most often:
Google has flagged your profile and hidden it from search results. Often triggered by a policy violation, duplicate listing, or sudden change in business information.
Your business has moved but the old address won't update. Google's address verification process loops back on itself and changes don't go through - sometimes for years.
You've requested verification but it's been weeks or months with no outcome. Postcards don't arrive, video verification fails, phone verification isn't available.
A second version of your business exists on Google - sometimes from a previous owner or an old setup. This splits your reviews and confuses Google about which listing to rank.
Google verifies businesses to confirm that the person managing the listing is actually associated with that business at that location. The process sounds simple but it breaks down constantly in practice - especially for tradies who work from home, have moved premises, or operate across multiple suburbs.
Postcard verification fails for mobile businesses. Google's default verification method sends a postcard with a PIN to your listed address. If you're a tradie operating from a home address or a business that's moved, the postcard goes to the wrong place - or Google flags the address as a residential location and rejects it.
Address changes trigger a re-verification loop. Changing your business address in Google Business Profile doesn't just update the listing — it can trigger a full re-verification requirement. If the new address verification fails, your listing reverts to the old address. This is exactly why some tradies have been stuck with an outdated address for years despite multiple attempts to fix it.
Video verification has strict requirements most people don't know about. Google's video verification option requires you to film specific things in a specific way — your signage, your equipment, proof of location. If the video doesn't meet their unstated requirements it gets rejected with minimal explanation.
Suspended profiles require a manual reinstatement request. If your profile is suspended, the only fix is submitting a reinstatement request to Google directly — and knowing exactly what to say in that request makes a significant difference to whether it gets approved.
Google support is difficult to navigate. Automated responses, long wait times and generic advice that doesn't apply to your specific situation — most tradies give up after a few attempts and assume the problem can't be fixed. It usually can.
An auto electrician in Mooroolbark told me "I've been attempting to change the details on Google Maps for 3 years. That is not the location of the business anymore and I can't get it changed."
Three years. The business had moved, customers were finding the wrong address, constant phone calls local to the wrong address and every attempt to update it had failed or looped back to the start. This is more common than most people realise - and it's fixable.
The address verification issue is one of several things we look at in a free 10-minute visibility check. In most cases we can identify exactly what's blocking the update and walk you through the fix or handle it as part of onboarding.
We work with Melbourne electricians, plumbers and service businesses to fix GBP issues and then optimise the profile properly so it starts ranking in the top 3 on Google Maps. Here's what we address:
Identify why your profile is unverified, suspended or stuck and map out the fastest path to resolution
Navigate Google's verification process on your behalf - postcard, video or identity-based verification depending on what applies
Submit reinstatement requests for suspended profiles with the right documentation and wording
Resolve address change issues including working through Google's re-verification requirements for updated locations
Identify and merge or remove duplicate listings that are splitting your reviews and weakening your ranking
Once verified and fixed — fully optimise your profile with the right categories, service areas, keywords, photos and services so you start appearing in local search results
Set up automated review collection so your review count builds consistently after every job
Important to know: Fixing a verification issue or suspended listing is the starting point - not the finish line. A verified profile with 8 old reviews and incomplete information still won't rank in the top 3. We combine the fix with full profile optimisation so your listing actually starts generating calls.
Once your Google Business Profile is verified, fixed and properly optimised, the results can move quickly - especially when combined with a review campaign to your existing customer list.

It depends on the verification method. Postcard verification officially takes 5–14 days but often longer. Video verification can be processed within a few days if the video meets Google's requirements. Phone and email verification are instant where available. For suspended or stuck listings, reinstatement requests can take 1–4 weeks depending on Google's workload - though having the request worded correctly can speed this up significantly.
Address changes in Google Business Profile trigger a re-verification process. If the new address fails verification — which happens frequently for home-based businesses, service-area businesses, or addresses that don't match Google's records — the change gets rejected and the listing reverts. The fix usually involves working through a specific verification pathway that bypasses the standard postcard method, or in some cases contacting Google Business Profile support directly with documentation proving the correct address.
A suspended profile has been flagged by Google and removed from Maps and local search results. It becomes invisible to customers searching for your business. Suspension is usually triggered by a perceived policy violation — which can be something as minor as a sudden change in business information, a keyword added to your business name, or a duplicate listing Google has flagged. Reinstatement requires submitting a formal request to Google with evidence that your business is legitimate and the listing complies with their guidelines.
No - duplicate listings violate Google's guidelines and will eventually result in one or both being removed or merged. If you have two listings, it's important to identify which one has your reviews and ranking history and merge or remove the duplicate carefully so you don't lose that data. Done incorrectly, a duplicate merge can wipe your review history.
A profile stuck in pending verification usually means a verification request was submitted but never completed, or completed but not processed by Google. Log into your Google Business Profile dashboard and check whether there's an outstanding verification action required. If the postcard hasn't arrived after 14 days, you can request a new one. If you've been waiting significantly longer than that, the verification may have expired and you'll need to restart the process or try an alternative verification method.
Not necessarily. Tradies and service-area businesses can set up a Google Business Profile as a service-area business - meaning you don't display a physical address publicly but serve customers across nominated suburbs. This is the correct setup for most mobile tradies and avoids the address visibility issue. However, Google still requires verification of your identity and service area, which can be done through video or other methods.
We look at your profile and identify the verification issue as part of our free 10-minute visibility check - no charge for the diagnosis. Fixing the issue and fully optimising your profile is included in our Google Business Profile SEO service, which starts from $600/month with no lock-in contract. There's no separate fee for resolving the verification issue.
Fixing a verification issue removes the barrier - but it's the optimisation after that drives the calls. A verified profile with the right categories, service areas, keywords, photos and a strong review count is what gets you into the top 3 on Google Maps. That's where the calls come from. We handle both the fix and the optimisation so you don't just have a working profile - you have one that's actively generating local enquiries.
We work exclusively with electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, auto electricians, builders, landscapers and other service businesses across Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
